"rosa parks is still alive" no more

i just saw on the news that rosa parks died.

she is important for many reasons and people smarter than me can write about them.

i can tell you why she means so much to me: whenever i've had conversations, arguments, discussions or out-and-out fights (with my family, the fights) about racism, i usually said this phrase: "rosa parks is still alive." i have written that sentence on this blog, i'm fairly certain. i'll check later. her being alive proved to me how close we all are  to the vortex of all change in the US regarding civil rights and how little time has passed -- how we must be patient and fight the good fight. so, now what can i say? may she rest in peace.

an arresting opening at de Young

what a fiasco! two short female police officers arrested this guy after he tried to sneak into the  deYoung Museum around midnight (see more pix on flickr). i don't blame him. the line to get in was at least a mile long by the time i got there, 10 minutes before i saw this arrest. the security supervisor, david dipple (i have to double check his name) was sternly trying to control the crowd -- he said he had the top 3 administrators of the museum freaking out trying to figure out what to do. when i asked him how many people the administation expected at the opening, he said between 20,000 and 50,000. wow, i thought, that's quite a range. at this point, i had long given up the idea of getting in the building. poor david finally managed to get permission to block those trying to re-enter the museam with a green bracelet. i think i'll come back later.
