best excuse for not having seen GETV

so i stopped by this blogher network thingy to meet my top10sources boss and on my way out (i was there for 10 mins to make plans with said boss aka halley suitt) ran into danah boyd. danah and i know each other only peripherally and i asked her if she'd seen GETV. she said, "i've heard about it but i dont own a television."

racism 201: glowing white lady stops cycle of violence in poor black family! it's like magic!

the Cold Case episode last night once again confirmed what we already know: pretty white ladies can illuminate a black family and help them solve all their problems. this kind of story writing will stop one day, but it still goes by unnoticed in tv world today.

ok, lemme explain a little. the main character on the show is a very pretty, extremely pale young female detective. she comes upon a black family deep in the projects -- four of the five brothers in this family have been shot and killed in what appears to be gang warfare. without going into the story further (there's a scooter named after W.E.B. Dubois....), the white detective's work with the family helps the mother stop smoking crack and convinces the last brother to let go of his desire for revenge.

i just wish they'd start writing smarter. they will, it's slow going.

i kind of like it. i'm not sure if i wanted to like it or not, but i just keep watching it (ok, admittedly, when one of the CSI episodes is not on somewhere). just now, i finished watching a "pod" (ok, that's dorky, but so is al gore) about the border patrol between US and mexico where the journalist was allowed to tape real-time car inspections -- in one car, they found 12 people hiding in the back of a yukon and in another, at least 5 bricks of marijuana.

surely, the topic of how legalizing marijuana would save the world trillions of dollars did not come up, BUT the journalist provided a good look at the job of border patrol officers. as in, these are just guys working and their job is hard and dangerous, regardless of how anyone feels about the kind of men who choose law enforcement as a career.

the next "pod" is called "between allah and j-lo" -- a segment about egypt's confused young culture.

and i'm loving the currentTV website, where the schedule is really real-time. of course, i can see that if there really is more content that may be difficult for upkeep.

YES, i'm thinking of sending something in.

so far, i say "huzzah" to al. let's see where it takes us.

terry semel's monster seed

so, has anyone else seen "filthy rich: cattle drive?"  it's a totally useless and absolutely entertaining piece of pop-TV where children of the rich and famous drive cattle to raise money for charity. the kids include progeny of the incredible hulk, pat benetar, robert blake, george foreman and.......

courtenay semel is the daughter of terry semel, who happens to be the ceo of yahoo and the employer of a handful of my friends/colleagues/sources.....

i spoke to one on the east coast yesterday, who said she and her friends have been able to keep the gossip about the boss' child  to a minimum, tho i dont know how they could.

in the first five seconds of the show, she hooks her claws into the attractive but clearly sleazy alex quinn (youngest son of anthony) and seethes jealously  ten minutes later when alex pays attention (never mind flirts with or speaks to) one of the other attractive women.

as with many non-actor celebrities, i think the best thing about her is she manifests to us the way normal people act, but she's on tv and she's rich and she's supposed to be above acting like the chubby girl in 7th grade. "have some dignity!" i want to yell at her. "you're gonna hve to talk about this in therapy!"

when the cattle drive got a bit rough, she called terry semel and sad, "dad, you have to like call the network or something."

without her, the show would be boring.
